Two
years in the making and planning, Star Walking lnc. hosted the
Second National Star Wars Convention, Force Two, over the Queen's
Birthday weekend (June 7-9) at the Edmund Barton Conference Centre.
Guests included Mr Jeremy Bullock (Boba Fett), Mr Kenny Baker
(R2 D2) and Mr Stephen J. Sansweet, Director of Specialty Marketing
for Lucasfilm Ltd who, at the opening ceremony, gave the convention
a world scoop by announcing for the first time publicly the cast
line-up for the prequels.
This
three day-long convention cost Star Walking Inc. just over $27,
000 to host. The number of delegates was just over five hundred
attending with thirty two dealers being present. The convention
had the largest dealer line-up since the world SF convention Aussie
Con Two in 1985! People came from all over Australia to attend,
with one delegate from the USA.
As
part of the convention, the twentieth anniversary banquet celebrations
for Star Wars were held at an off site undisclosed location which
was an airport hangar at the nearby Moorabbin airport. It was
a costumed night with many, many people dressing up for the big
event. The attendance at the Star Wars banquet numbered two hundred
and fifty-six people, with Kenny Baker providing a highly entertaining
and memorable act. Inside the hangar a large and superbly crafted
Millennium Falcon facade had been built by Justin Dix and his
learn; it proved an excellent and popular backdrop for photos.
The scene was complemented by a huge dance floor and lighting
show.
The
convention featured a detailed historical display of twenty-three
years of Star Wars from its inception to the present day, which
was the brainchild of Darren Reid. The glass cabinets of Star
Wars collectibles included in the display made for most informative
and interesting viewing. Toys "R" Us gave all delegates
a Star Wars Cantina Band member action figure as their way of
saying 'thank you' to the many loyal fans. Special thanks must
go to Mike Cohen from Toy "R" Us for providing an excellent
trade display of upcoming Star Wars products assisted by Hasbro.
The
honoured guests often mingled with convention delegates, to share
meals and chat with the fans, with artist Hugh
Fleming supplying the cover for the con. book.
The
auction was long, fast and fierce. The masquerade saw many new
fans enter which is pleasing to see. Our video program was in
a modern, purpose-built one hundred seater hi-tech auditorium
and was filled to capacity for the Star Wars Holiday Special.
The double strand program along with the video program ensured
fans were kept busy throughout the convention. The guest shows
were filled to capacity and the photo/autograph sessions were
quite hectic. Our content of theart show was first class. Many
a fan would walk around in their costumes and hall prizes were
given as an encouragement. The OBIES were announced and presented.
Lots
of good will and new friends were made and old friends caught
up with each other. It seems most people took home with them some
fond memories of the convention (and depleted bank balances),
which I reckon [is] what it's all about, fans coming together
and sharing their
love of the Star Wars universe and having a fantastic time.
